The Wine FamilyRadical 酉

One jar of wine, all the sorrows and joys of the world

ShuowenShuowen: “酉 means completion. In the eighth month the millet ripens and strong wine can be brewed. Drawn after the ancient form of 酉.”

The oracle form of 酉 is a pointed-bottom wine jar: broad belly, narrow mouth, the aroma sealed inside. The you hour (five to seven in the evening) was when the ancients opened their jars; every character with 酉 is wine business — brew, pour, revel, drunk, sober, ferment. Half of Chinese sorrow and joy is steeped in this radical: joy calls for raising cups, sorrow calls for drowning cares, parting calls for “one more cup”, and even life’s great clarity is called “waking”.

The Root Character · Reading “酉” in Three Layers

See the form

A pointed-bottom jar: broad belly, narrow neck, a lid on top — the point lets it seat into earth for fermenting.

Read the logic

酉 characters are all wine business: 酿, 酌, 酣, 醉, 醒, 配, 酸, 酵 — the jar opened at the you hour, one radical keeping one hour’s warmth.

Grasp the wisdom

“Inside drunkenness, a greater cosmos; in the pot, sun and moon in the long day.” The 酉 radical keeps another outlet for Chinese feeling: enter it, and be sure to come out — which is why this chain ends at “awake”.

Regular script
  1. Oracle boneA pointed jar, bands drawn on the belly.
  2. BronzeThe belly swells; the neck cinches.
  3. Small sealThe jar squared; inner bars like the wine within.
  4. Clerical & regularSeven strokes fix the form: 酉.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.

The Chain of Wine

The complete life of a jar: brew, pour, revel, lose control, drink deep, pour libation — and always, in the end, wake.

niàng

To brew.

Grain sealed in the jar while time does the work — brewing is a field’s suspense.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

酒 jiǔ

FormWater (氵) beside a jar (酉).

LogicLiquid plus jar — three thousand years without changing its face.

WisdomWine is water made fire, and grain made poetry — in oracle script it already looked like this: drunk at one glance.

配 pèi

FormThe jar (酉) beside 己 — blending wines to colour.

Logic配 originally meant blending wines: mixing different brews into exactly the right cup.

Wisdom调配, 配套, 般配 — every kind of matching is the blender’s craft. 配 came from wine, and it is all about measure.

酸 suān

FormThe jar (酉) beside 夋 as sound.

LogicVinegar — wine gone wrong turns sour.

Wisdom酸 came from wine failing: vinegar is wine that failed. Yet vinegar built a kitchen of its own — what fails may still found a house of its own flavour.

酵 jiào

FormThe jar (酉) beside 孝 as sound — the mother of wine.

LogicThe mysterious force that wakes the grain — the ancients called it the wine mother.

Wisdom酵母, 发酵 — dough rises by it, wine is born of it: the invisible force changes the visible world.
