The Horse FamilyRadical 马

From a colt to a vow four horses cannot outrun

ShuowenShuowen: “Horse is fury. It is martial. Drawn as the horse’s head, mane, tail and four legs.”

The oracle form of 马 is a galloping horse in profile: long face, mane, four hooves, flying tail — nothing missing. The horse radical keeps the age of cavalry: the thousand-li horse is a 骥, a four-horse team is a 驷, two abreast are 骈; and a horse six hands tall is 骄 “proud”, a startled horse is 骇 “terrified”, leaping astride is 骗 “cheat”, halting is 驻 “station” — pride, terror, deceit and garrison, all the person’s affairs, came from the horse.

The Root Character · Reading “马” in Three Layers

See the form

The oracle horse stands in profile: long face, rising mane, four hooves down, tail streaming.

Read the logic

The radical sits on the left: colt, thoroughbred, steed, verify, terrify, garrison, cheat, proud — everything of the horse, and of the rider.

Grasp the wisdom

“Once a word leaves the mouth, a four-horse team cannot chase it back.” The fastest team in the land cannot outrun a spoken word — speed was the horse’s gift to language.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.

The Chain of Horse-power

The ancients graded horses by age, colour, stride and team — this chain is the Spring-and-Autumn period’s horsepower spec sheet.

驹

jū

A two-year-old colt.

“A white colt passes a crack” — time leaps like a white horse past a doorframe: swiftness reduced to one character.

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

骗 piàn

FormA horse (马) beside “flat/sudden” (扁) — leaping aboard.

Logic骗 was originally a riding term: to spring onto a horse by any means.

WisdomLater it meant swindling by any means — from mounting a horse to mounting a confidence trick, one character keeps the streetwise air.

骇 hài

FormA horse (马) with 亥 as sound.

LogicA startled horse — the most easily spooked, the fiercest of livestock.

Wisdom惊涛骇浪 — the horse’s terror is the fiercest terror: 骇 became the general word for horror.

驻 zhù

FormA horse (马) with “master” (主) — carriage and horse halting.

LogicTo halt horses and carriage is 驻.

Wisdom驻足, 驻地, 驻守 — where the horse stops is the “station”. An army pitches camp from the moment hooves touch ground.

验 yàn

FormA horse (马) with 佥 as sound.

LogicOriginally a horse’s name — for every horse must be “verified”: bone, stride, temper.

Wisdom检验, 验证, 实验 — “verify” came from the horse-buyer’s eye: is it good? Trot it out and see.
