The Jade FamilyRadical 玉

The finest stone, the gentleman’s virtue

ShuowenShuowen: “Jade is the finest of stones, endowed with five virtues: warm and lustrous — such is benevolence.”

The oracle form of 玉 is a string of jade pieces on a cord — beauty worn on the body. Jade is “the finest of stones”, yet far more than stone: the Chinese staked their highest virtue, their whole ritual order and their best wishes on this warm stone. And here is the secret: nine-tenths of the so-called “king radical” characters are actually jade — 珍, 珠, 理, 班. Half of ritual civilisation lives in this family.

The Root Character · Reading “玉” in Three Layers

See the form

The oracle form: three jade pieces strung on a cord. The king’s 王 is three horizontals crossed by one vertical — the two look alike, so jade took a dot.

Read the logic

As a component jade is written 王 (the “king side”): 珍, 珠, 理, 班 — nine parts jade, one part king. Read the radical first, and never mistake fine jade for a monarch.

Grasp the wisdom

“Thinking of the gentleman, he is warm as jade.” Jade is warm without dazzling, hard without wounding — the ideal Chinese character is a piece of jade.

The Chain of Ritual Jade

How does raw stone become a state treasure? Carve, grind, complete, hold in ceremony — “cut and filed, carved and ground” describes exactly this road.

From raw stone to state treasure
璞

pú

Unworked jade, hidden in stone.

Uncarved jade, unrefined gold — what has not been worked stands for the natural self.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

弄 nòng

FormTwo hands (廾) over jade (王).

LogicShuowen: “弄, to play with.” Hands turning a piece of jade.

Wisdom弄 is built from jade: what the hands loved handling was jade. 弄玉, 戏弄, 玩弄 — intimacy between hands and stone.

班 bān

FormA knife (刀) between two pieces of jade (王).

LogicTo divide jade with a knife is 班 — the act of distributing jade.

Wisdom班师, 班组, 下班 — from dividing jade to grouping people: those divided together become one class.

理 lǐ

FormJade (王) with 里 as sound — to work jade.

LogicShuowen: “理, to work jade” — carving along its natural veins.

WisdomVein, order, principle, truth — the whole Chinese idea of 理 came from the feel of carving jade: all things have a grain; follow it and succeed.

碧 bì

FormJade (王), white (白), stone (石) — a stone like jade.

LogicA bluish-white stone that resembles jade is 碧.

Wisdom碧 is the colour between stone and jade — jade-green, jade-blood, jade-sea: a beauty both hard and clear.
