The Vehicle FamilyRadical 车
Rank and rule, written on one carriage
ShuowenShuowen: “Vehicle (车), the general name of box and wheel. Made by Xi Zhong in the time of Xia. Pictograph.”
The oracle form of 车 is an entire carriage in portrait: wheel, box, shaft and yoke all present. In the Spring and Autumn period, “a state of a thousand chariots” counted as a great power — the chariot was national strength, and rank: the Son of Heaven rode the lù, grandees the xuān. The vehicle radical keeps everything on the road: wheel, axle, spoke and hub are the parts; transporting, carrying, comparing are the work; and the names Su Shi and Su Zhe — one took the carriage rail, the other the wheel track — hold a father’s whole lesson in conduct.
The Root Character · Reading “车” in Three Layers
See the form
The oracle chariot: a wheel centred, with box, shaft and yoke — an ancient engineering drawing.
Read the logic
On the left the parts (wheel, axle, spoke, hub); beside it the deeds (turn, transport, carry) — everything of the carriage takes 车.
Grasp the wisdom
“Same axles, same script.” The first thing Qin unified was making every wheel in the land cut the same track — the rule began at the axle.
The Making of a Glyph
- Oracle boneWheel, box, shaft and yoke — a whole-car diagram.
- BronzeThe wheel centred; parts falling away.
- Small sealOne wheel one axle, vertical through.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.
The Chain of Carriages
What you ride is who you are — this chain runs from the common name to the Son of Heaven’s carriage, and every step is a rank.
By build and by rankThe general name of box and wheel.
The name for all carriages — “a state of a thousand 乘”: the count of chariots was the count of power.

转 zhuǎn
FormThe vehicle (车) beside 专 as sound — wheels turning.
LogicWheels turning, round and round — 转.
Wisdom转运, 转身, 转机 — once the wheel turns, no rut is final: round and round again is the philosophy the wheel taught.
轰 hōng
FormThree carriages (车) abreast.
LogicMany carriages together thunder — the simplified character says it with three carts.
Wisdom轰然, 轰动, 轰轰烈烈 — the loudest traffic jam in the Chinese language.
斩 zhǎn
FormAn axe (斤) before a carriage (车).
LogicTied to the chariot-division execution — the axe on the carriage, the extremity of finality.
Wisdom斩钉截铁, 快刀斩乱麻 — 斩 went from the gravest punishment to the sharpest decisiveness.
