The Fish FamilyRadical 鱼

From a single roe to the leviathan of the northern deep

ShuowenShuowen: “Fish, a creature of the water. Pictograph. The fish’s tail resembles the swallow’s.”

The oracle form of 鱼 is a complete fish: head, scales, fins, tail — among the finest drawings in the script. The fish radical keeps the water-dwellers: carp, crucian, shark, whale, each named; and 渔, 鲜, 鲁 boiled the daily business of catching and tasting fish into characters. The end of this chain belongs to Zhuangzi: in the northern deep there is a fish called the Kun — a fish that swam into the Chinese imagination.

The Root Character · Reading “鱼” in Three Layers

See the form

The oracle fish: pointed head, scaled body, spread fins, swinging tail — nothing missing.

Read the logic

The fish radical usually sits on the left (whale, shark, fresh, carp) — every scaled creature belongs here.

Grasp the wisdom

“Standing by the pond envying the fish — better to go home and weave a net.” Fish taught the first practical lesson: envy less, build more.

Regular script
  1. Oracle boneHead, scales, fins, tail — the finest of pictographs.
  2. BronzeThe body rounds; scales simplify.
  3. Small sealFluid lines, tail curling.
  4. Clerical & regularBlade above, four dots below — the four dots are the fish’s tail, surviving.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.

The Chain of Swimming

From a single roe to the Kun of the northern deep — the first half of this chain is the fisherman’s observation, the second half is Zhuangzi’s imagination.

From small fish to the fish of legend
鲕

ér

Fish roe, not yet a fish.

鲕 is where fish begin — one egg holding the ambition of a whole river.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

渔 yú

FormWater (氵) beside a fish (鱼).

LogicTo fish is 渔 — the contest between person and fish, from bare hands to woven nets.

Wisdom“Drain the pond to fish — you will catch much, but next year, no fish.” Sustainability was written into the character.

鲜 xiān

FormA fish (鱼) beside a sheep (羊).

LogicFish and sheep — the two poles of the ancient palate — joined into one character for “delicious”.

Wisdom鲜 is a compound idea on the tongue. Read also xiǎn, “rare”: one character holding both savour and scarcity.

鲁 lǔ

FormA mouth (口) above a fish (鱼) — fish entering the mouth.

LogicThe common reading: the taste of fish was glorious — Confucius’s home state 鲁 knew its fish.

Wisdom鲁钝, “dull”, may have begun as a very good dinner — the stateliest state name hiding a homely meal.

鲠 gěng

FormFish (鱼) beside 更 as sound.

LogicA fishbone — stuck in the throat, impossible to swallow or expel.

Wisdom“A bone in the throat” — 鲠 ran from fishbone to forthrightness: speak the truth, even when it sticks.
