The Rain FamilyRadical 雨

Whatever falls from the sky belongs to the rain household

ShuowenShuowen: “Rain: water falling from cloud. One line is heaven; the frame is cloud; the water drops between.”

The oracle form of 雨: one line for heaven, a frame for cloud, droplets falling between — the most lyrical pictograph of them all. The rain radical keeps everything the sky lets down: snow, frost, hail, fog, thunder, lightning, rosy clouds — more than half of the sky’s household lives under the rain roof. The Chinese write sorrow with rain (“rain falls thick on Qingming”), joy with rain (“sweet rain after long drought”), and even waiting with rain (“a good rain knows its season”).

See the form

The oracle rain: a bar of sky, a frame of cloud, drops scattering down.

Read the logic

Rain-top characters are all that heaven lets down: snow, frost, hail, thunder, lightning, glow, drizzle — whatever falls belongs to the rain household.

Grasp the wisdom

“A good rain knows its season, and comes when spring begins.” Rain’s highest virtue is timing: come when needed, stop when due.

The Chain of Skyfall

The same vapour, landing on leaves as dew, on the ground as frost, drifting as six-petalled snow, wrapped in ice as hail — and with one sound and one light, the sky speaks.

From condensation to the voice of heaven
露

lù

Dew — water beading on leaves at night.

“Dew whitens from this very night; the moon is brightest at home” — dew is the gentlest fall: it disturbs no one.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

雷 léi

FormRain (雨) over a “field” (田) — the field is the rolling wheel of thunder.

LogicIn oracle script the centre of 雷 is a whirling disc of lightning.

WisdomThe thunder cart rolls — the ancients heard thunder as heaven’s chariot passing: thunder was not noise, but the rumble of the royal convoy.

电 diàn

FormRain (雨) over 申 — the zigzag flash itself.

Logic电 is the original character for lightning: the first sky-light the ancients recorded.

WisdomFrom one light tearing the rain curtain to the current lighting the world — the character 电 is three thousand years old, and three hundred years young.

雪 xuě

FormRain (雨) with a broom (彗) — the sweepable fall.

LogicA broom hides inside 雪: snow falls, and snow is swept.

Wisdom“Sweep the snow before your own gate” is called selfish — but sweeping your own steps is the honest way of living: the snow fell on someone’s doorstep.

零 líng

FormRain (雨) beside “order” (令) — drops falling slowly at command.

LogicThe root meaning: rain falling drop by drop — 零落, 凋零.

Wisdom零 is “falling bit by bit”: odd numbers, fragments, loneliness — the smallest counting began by counting raindrops.
