The Eye FamilyRadical 目

The art of seeing is the art of the heart

ShuowenShuowen: “Eye (目), the human eye. Pictograph. The heavy stroke is the pupil.”

The oracle form of 目 is an eye entire: socket and pupil complete — written sideways because in vertical columns a horizontal eye saved space, and so the eye has lain on its side for three thousand years. The eye radical keeps “the art of seeing”: 看, 见, 观, 察, 瞥, 眺, 眷 — the same act of looking, at different angles, depths and moods. The Chinese say “seeing is believing”, and also “observe yourself and you know others”: to see the world is finally to see yourself clearly.

The Root Character · Reading “目” in Three Layers

See the form

The oracle eye: a socket with one dot of pupil — the eye lying on its side.

Read the logic

Eye characters are acts of seeing: 看, 见, 观, 察, 瞥, 眺 — the ancients graded the depths of looking with great care.

Grasp the wisdom

“The eye cannot look two ways at once and still see clearly, the ear cannot hear two ways at once and still hear keenly.” To see is to focus: the eye’s discipline is the heart’s.

The Making of a Glyph

Oracle bone · schematic

目
Regular script
  1. Oracle boneA horizontal eye, the pupil a bean of light.
  2. BronzeThe eye stands upright, pupil centred.
  3. Small sealA long frame, two bars like ripples.
  4. Clerical & regularFive strokes fix the form: 目.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.

The Chain of the Gaze

One act — looking — in eight grades: from 看 at a distance to 眷 looking back with longing. Where the gaze lands, the heart has landed.

By depth and distance of looking
看

kàn

A hand (手) shading the eye (目) — to gaze afar.

看 = hand over the eyes — Sun Wukong’s pose: looking begins at the horizon.

盯 dīng

FormThe eye (目) beside 丁 as sound — eyes nailed to the target.

LogicTo fix the eyes without moving is 盯: 丁 is the root of 钉, “nail”.

WisdomStaring without letting go is the plainest form of effort — fix on one thing long enough, and it opens.

眠 mián

FormThe eye (目) beside 民 as sound — eyes closing.

LogicLids closing is 眠.

Wisdom睡眠, 长眠 — 眠 is the eye’s door closing: tired of seeing the world, let the eyes go off duty first.

盼 pàn

FormThe eye (目) beside 分 as sound.

LogicThe Songs: “her beautiful eyes so distinct (盼)” — 盼 originally meant eyes clear in black and white.

Wisdom盼望 — from the clearness of the eye to the expectation of the heart: the most moving gaze is black-and-white, with one person inside it.

眨 zhǎ

FormThe eye (目) beside “weary” (乏) — the tired eye blinking.

LogicA blink is the eye’s breath: open, close, and the spirit renews.

WisdomIn the blink of an eye — the shortest unit of time was set by the eye: a person blinks four hundred million times in a life, each one a small rest.
