The Bone FamilyRadical 骨
Without hard bones, no safe place in the world
ShuowenShuowen: “Bone is the core of flesh. From 冎 with flesh beneath.”
The character 骨: 冎 (guǎ, the skeleton’s frame) over 肉 (flesh) — bone is the core of flesh. The bone radical keeps the body’s structure: from skull to skeleton, a survey of the frame; and it keeps character — the Chinese scold a “lazy bone”, honour “hard bones”, praise a rare “frame”. Flesh ages, skin wrinkles; bone is the last draft of a person’s character.
The Root Character · Reading “骨” in Three Layers
See the form
冎 is the pictograph of a jointed skeleton, with flesh below — bone, the kernel of the body.
Read the logic
Bone characters name structure and hurt alike: skull, spine, marrow, skeleton — an anatomy chart in characters.
Grasp the wisdom
“Without hard bones, no firm place in the world.” The Chinese bone is long past calcium: 傲骨 (proud bones), 风骨 (bones of style), 硬骨头 (hard bones) — bone is the last draft of character.
The Making of a Glyph
- Oracle boneJointed segments stacked, flesh beneath.
- BronzeThe frame widens; flesh attaches.
- Small sealFrame and flesh joined, evenly set.
- Clerical & regularInner bar, outer 月: 骨.
Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.
The Chain of the Frame
A head-to-toe survey of one skeleton — every bone has a “human sentence” to say.
From skull to skeletonThe skull — house of the brain.
The hardest bone guards the softest tissue — on top of the skull rides thought.
Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One
When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.
滑 huá
FormWater (氵) beside bone (骨) — the grease within the joint.
Logic滑 was tied to bone: the unctuous matter between bones lets the joint glide like water.
WisdomSmooth, lubricate — the slipperiest thing in the body is that little fat in the joint. Slipperiness is the bone’s wisdom: where hard meets hard, one layer of soft.
髓 suǐ
FormBone (骨) beside a clipped “follow” (随) — what travels within the bone.
LogicShuowen: “髓, the fat of bone.”
Wisdom骨髓, 精髓, 深入骨髓 — marrow is bone’s last layer: study that reaches the marrow has only then begun.
髋 kuān
FormBone (骨) beside “broad” (宽) — the broad bone that bears.
LogicThe hip bone is broad: spine above, legs below.
WisdomThe broad can sit; those who sit endure — 髋 teaches: to carry great things, first widen your base.
骸 hái
FormBone (骨) beside 亥 as sound.
LogicThe bones of the whole body are 骸 — four limbs and a hundred bones.
Wisdom“Setting free beyond the form” — the frame is a shell; what roams free is the mind. At the Orchid Pavilion Wang Xizhi said: do not let the body imprison the soul.
