The Music FamilyRadical 乐

Eight sounds in accord, the human heart at peace

ShuowenShuowen: “Music (乐): the general name of the five tones and eight sounds. Drawn as a drum on its stand; wood is the frame.”

The oracle form of 乐 (樂) is silk strings stretched over a wooden stand — string music was “music” at its first. One character, two readings: yuè is music, lè is joy — and to the ancients these were one thing: music transforms people, and hearing music brings joy. The Duke of Zhou made rites and music together; “rites set things apart, music binds them as one.” The eight sounds (metal, stone, clay, hide, silk, wood, gourd, bamboo) govern eight families of instruments — this chain walks one ancient orchestra by material.

The Root Character · Reading “乐” in Three Layers

See the form

Silk strings over a wooden stand, ornaments between — 樂 is instrument and happiness in one character.

Read the logic

乐 characters concern sound: music, instruments, pitch; and 乐 doubles as “joy” — the ancients wrote the connection directly into the character.

Grasp the wisdom

“Awakened by poetry, established by rites, perfected by music.” Music is the last course in becoming a person: rites govern the rules; music moves the heart.

The Making of a Glyph

Oracle bone · schematic

乐
Regular script
  1. Oracle boneSilk over wood — a stringed instrument.
  2. BronzeA “白” between the strings, like a plectrum adjusting pitch.
  3. Small sealSilk and wood distinct, evenly set.
  4. Clerical & regularFive strokes fix the form: 乐.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.

The Chain of Eight Sounds

The Zhou classified instruments by material into “eight sounds” — this chain walks one ancient orchestra from clay to metal.

By material: clay, hide, silk, gourd, bamboo, stone, metal
埙

xūn

The clay ocarina — fired earth.

Six holes, seven thousand years old — a sound like the earth sighing.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

鼓 gǔ

FormA drum on its stand (壴) with a hand holding the stick (攴).

LogicA hand striking a drum — the compound idea performs the playing.

Wisdom鼓动, 鼓励, 鼓舞 — every word of “cheering on” comes from striking a drum.

音 yīn

FormA mark inside “word” (言) — sound with measure.

LogicWhat the mouth utters is 言; what is uttered with order is 音 — sound is noise; 音 is noise with form.

Wisdom知音 — the connoisseur hears not the noise but the form. Bo Ya smashed his qin because the form had lost its listener.

章 zhāng

Form“Ten” under “sound” — a piece brought to its close.

LogicShuowen: “one complete piece of music is a 章.”

Wisdom章节, 篇章, 章法 — the 章 of an essay was first a movement of music: writing, like music, has its movements.

韵 yùn

Form“Sound” beside “even” (匀) — sound evenly spread.

LogicSound even and blended is 韵 — uneven, and there is no 韵.

Wisdom韵律, 韵味, 风韵 — evenness that pleases is 韵. Rhyme in poetry rhymes because of this “even”.
