The Wind FamilyRadical 风
The formless thing, arriving from eight directions
ShuowenShuowen: “Wind: the eight winds. When wind moves, worms are born. From worm, with 凡 as sound.”
Wind has no shape, so the ancients borrowed a divine bird — the oracle form of 风 is 凤, the phoenix: wings beating, wind rising. Later a worm hid in the character: Shuowen says “when wind moves, worms are born.” The wind radical keeps every motion of the air — 飘, 飒, 飙, 飓 — and the ancients went further, naming the winds of all eight directions, giving 风骨 to literature and 风范 to character.
The Root Character · Reading “风” in Three Layers
See the form
The oracle form borrows the phoenix — wings beating is wind blowing; the small seal hides a worm inside 凡: wind moves, worms live.
Read the logic
Wind characters are all motions of air: 飘, 飒, 飙, 飓 — the stronger the wind, the more urgent the character.
Grasp the wisdom
“The tree would be still, but the wind does not stop.” Wind was the first uncontrollable force the ancients knew — it takes no orders, yet it quickens all things.
The Making of a Glyph
- Oracle boneThe phoenix stands for wind — crest high, wings spread.
- BronzeThe tail spreads; the wind is nearly visible.
- Small seal凡 outside, worm within — wind moves, worms live.
- Clerical & regularThe 几 frame wraps the worm: 风.
Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.
The Chain of Eight Winds
The Lüshi Chunqiu named the winds of all eight directions, each answering a season — the circle of winds is the circle of the year.
Winds of eight directions, answering eight seasonsWind of the east, arriving at the spring equinox.
Ming shu — “the multitude brightened”: when the east wind rises, all things grow together.

飒 sà

Wisdom英姿飒爽 — the wind’s crispness was lent to a person’s bearing.
飙 biāo
Form“猋” — three dogs running — with wind (风).
LogicThe whirlwind is 飙: a wind even three dogs cannot outrun.
Wisdom飙车, 飙升 — 飙 is the family’s top speed: three sprinting dogs inside one character.
飓 jù
Form“具” as sound with wind (风).
Logic飓风, the hurricane — the wind’s largest register, a visitor from the sea.
WisdomWhen the hurricane passes — at the wind’s far end lie ruin and rebuilding: the ancients named it with awe already in hand.
