The Ear FamilyRadical 耳
Hear all, and be clear
ShuowenShuowen: “Ear, the organ of hearing. Pictograph.”
The oracle form of 耳 is an ear’s outline in full. The ear radical is one of the wisest families in the script: 聪 is “hearing many voices and telling them apart”; 职 originally meant “to remember what was heard”; 聊 originally meant “a ringing in the ears”; and the traditional 聖 (sage) takes the ear — the sage is the one who listens well. The traditional 聽 is finer still: an ear, a king, ten eyes and one heart — to listen with ear, eye and heart at once.

Read the logic
Ear characters are acts of listening: 闻, 聆, 聪, 聋, 聒 — and hiding in the simplified forms: 耻 (hear, and stop), 职 (hear, and record), 聊 (the ringing).
Grasp the wisdom
“Hear all sides and be clear; hear one side and be dark.” The ear’s duty is not to hear, but to hear everything — the 聪 of 聪明 is the ear; the 明 is the eye.

From attentive hearing to ears that will not hearTo hear — the ear taking something in.
The traditional 聽 = ear + king + ten eyes + one heart: to listen with ear, eye and heart, all at once.
