The Stone FamilyRadical 石

The bone of the earth, the measure of sincerity

ShuowenShuowen: “Stone, mountain stone. Under a cliff (厂); the mouth (口) is the pictograph.”

The oracle form of 石: a cliff (厂) with a stone at its foot. The stone radical keeps the earth’s building material — inkstone, stele, brick, roller — and doubles as a measure: one dàn of rice. The Chinese say “firm as a bedrock rock” for hardness, “sincerity can split metal and stone” for resolve, and “a pillar-stone minister” for the one who bears the weight — the most silent material carries the heaviest character.

The Root Character · Reading “石” in Three Layers

See the form

A stone (口) beneath a cliff (厂) — with the cliff and the stone, you have 石.

Read the logic

On the left it makes implements (inkstone, stele, brick); stacked it makes compound ideas (磊); it even serves as a measure: ten dou to one 石 (dàn).

Grasp the wisdom

“Where utmost sincerity reaches, even metal and stone open.” Stone is the limit of hardness — so it became the measure of sincerity: what can open stone is sincerity indeed.

The Chain of Stone Grades

A stone’s size and its destination: from wayside gravel to the scholar’s inkstone — one chain reads a stone’s whole life.

From gravel to the scholar’s desk
砾

lì

Small broken stones — gravel.

Gravel — the stone’s childhood, scattered by the roadside, unnoticed.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

破 pò

FormA stone (石) with skin (皮) peeling.

LogicWhen the stone’s surface flakes, it is 破 — broken.

Wisdom破坏, 破例, 破釜沉舟 — “break” began as a stone’s skin coming off: once the surface cracks, the truth shows. No breaking, no building.

磊 lěi

FormThree stones (石) stacked.

LogicStones upon stones make 磊 — piled high, and every block in plain sight.

Wisdom光明磊落 — lay the heart out like stacked stones: every one of them can face the light.

研 yán

FormA stone (石) beside “open/split” (开) — grinding stone on stone.

LogicOriginally to grind — making coarse fine, dull sharp.

Wisdom研究, 钻研 — the Chinese compared scholarship to grinding stone: slow work, fine results.

磨 mó

FormHemp (麻) over stone (石) — hemp and stone grinding.

LogicThe mill turns a thousand circles, grinding grain and temper alike.

Wisdom磨练, 折磨, 磨蹭 — “grinding” is the stone’s temperament: slow, but never for nothing.
