The Sun FamilyRadical 日

Wherever the sun goes, a character is made

ShuowenShuowen: “Sun is fullness (shí) — the essence of the great yang, never waning. From an enclosure and one line; pictograph.”

日 is the boldest pictograph in the sky: a circle with a dot. Watching its rise and fall, the ancients built the whole system of time — 旦 is sunrise, 暮 sunset, 昃 the westering afternoon; and by combining the sun with horizon and trees they made characters full of picture: east, bright above the wood, dark below it. Within one day, eight characters measure the light.

The Root Character · Reading “日” in Three Layers

See the form

A disc with a dot (or a stroke) at its centre — the sun hanging in the sky.

Read the logic

Sun meets the horizon and makes 旦 “dawn”; sun meets the trees and makes 东 “east,” 杲 “bright,” 杳 “dark,” 莫 “dusk” — wherever the sun went, a character followed.

Grasp the wisdom

“When the sun stands at midday it begins to decline; when the moon is full it begins to wane.” In Chinese wisdom, decline-at-the-peak is not pessimism — it is a reminder: everything is on the road.

Regular script
  1. Oracle boneA circle with a dot; sometimes squarish.
  2. BronzeThe circle neatens; the centre dot thickens.
  3. Small sealOuter round, inner stroke — even and upright.
  4. Clerical & regularOuter square, inner stroke: 日.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.

The Chain of Daylight

From first light to lights-out, the ancients left a character for every station of the sun — a sundial written in characters.

One day in the life of the sun
旦

dàn

Shuowen: “bright — the sun seen above the horizon; the line is the ground.”

The sun clears the horizon and the world brightens: New Year’s morning (元旦) always opens with 旦.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

旦 dàn

FormThe sun (日) rising over the ground (一).

LogicThe sun just clear of the horizon — the moment fixed forever in a character.

Wisdom旦 is the shape of hope: the darkest hour is past, the sun has left the horizon.

明 míng

FormSun and moon shining together (or: moonlight through a window, 囧+月).

LogicShuowen: “明, to illuminate.” Sun by day, moon by night — the world is never without light.

WisdomThe plainest idea of brightness: one light in the sky by day, another by night — something is always shining on you.

杲 gǎo

FormThe sun (日) above the trees (木).

LogicSun over the treetops: “杲杲 gǎogǎo — the bright rising sun,” the brightest morning in the Book of Songs.

WisdomRise, and be bright — 杲 paints luminosity as a position: how high the sun has climbed.

杳 yǎo

FormThe sun (日) sunk beneath the trees (木).

LogicShuowen: “杳, dark — the sun below the wood.” Mirror twin of 杲.

WisdomOne rises, one sinks; one bright, one dark. Between light and dark, the sun only changed position — and so did the meaning.
