The Mountain FamilyRadical 山
From one hill to the peak of peaks
ShuowenShuowen: “Mountain is utterance (xuān) — breathing forth, generating the ten thousand things; stone that is high. Pictograph.”
The oracle form of 山 is three peaks standing together — not drawn for likeness but for spirit. With 山 as a sign, the ancients named every shape a mountain takes: the low hill, the long ridge, the sharp peak, the cliff-wall; then borrowed the mountain’s physics for human qualities — lofty, steadfast, forbidding. A mountain’s height was the ancient measure of the world.
The Root Character · Reading “山” in Three Layers
See the form
Three peaks in a row, the middle one taller — the silhouette of peaks.
Read the logic
As a component 山 usually stands on the left (peak, ridge, steep, sheer) or at the foot (岳, 崇, 嵩); everything of the mountain takes the sign.
Grasp the wisdom
“Climbing the eastern hill, Lu looked small; climbing Mount Tai, all under heaven looked small.” Mountains say nothing, yet rank everything. “Steady as a mountain”, “kindness heavy as a mountain” — the Chinese entrusted their heaviest trust to the stillest thing.
The Making of a Glyph
- Oracle boneThree peaks standing, each distinct.
- BronzePeaks filled in, solid as a stele.
- Small sealThree rounded columns, the ridgeline held in.
- Clerical & regularThe middle stroke towers: 山.
Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.
The Chain of Forms
Every shape a mountain takes has its character — between the low hill and the sheer summit lies the scale with which the ancients measured the world.
From low to high, gentle to sheerA low hill.
One person can climb it, one glance can exhaust it. “A fox, dying, turns its head to its home hill” — even the fox remembers its own small hill.

岛 dǎo
