The Earth FamilyRadical 土

From a grain of dust to ten thousand li of frontier

ShuowenShuowen: “Earth (土) is that which puts forth (tǔ) living things. The two strokes draw the ground below and within; the vertical shows things emerging.”

The oracle form of 土 is a lump of earth heaped on the ground — the first mountain was earth. From this root the ancients measured the land outward from a single speck of dust: dust, haze, loam, field, wild, realm, frontier unfold into an entire living space; and with the character 社 the earth itself was raised to the altar. The land is China’s deepest faith: earth grows the crops, and grows the ethics too.

The Root Character · Reading “土” in Three Layers

See the form

A lump of earth heaped above the ground line — earth is a mountain in miniature.

Read the logic

On the left it makes the works of land (地, 场, 培); at the foot, foundations (基, 堂, 堡) — characters with earth are enterprises on the ground.

Grasp the wisdom

社 is the spirit sign over earth — the land itself worshipped as god. 江山社稷: “稷” is the grain god, “社” the earth god; the legitimacy of a state is written in land and food.

The Making of a Glyph

Oracle bone · schematic

土
Regular script
  1. Oracle boneA lump of earth on the ground line, sometimes with an added mark.
  2. BronzeThe lump fills out; the ground levels.
  3. Small sealTwo horizontals and a vertical — even as a ritual vessel.
  4. Clerical & regularThree strokes fix the form: 土.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.

The Chain of Territory

From a grain of dust to ten thousand li of frontier — nine characters, nine marks on the ancients’ ruler of the land.

From the minute to the vast
尘

chén

The smallest particle of earth.

The old form 塵: Shuowen — “deer running raises dust.” Simplified to “small” over “earth” — plainer, and truer.

圭 guī

FormTwo “earth” (土) characters stacked.

Logic圭 is a jade tablet — the token a king hands a lord when granting land. (See the Jade Family.)

WisdomThe tablet in a lord’s hand is earth made portable — the deed of enfeoffment. Authority, in an object.

坐 zuò

FormTwo people (人) seated on the earth (土).

LogicThe ancients sat on the ground — earth was the first chair.

Wisdom坐 keeps the memory of the mat-sitting age: before chairs came to China, the earth was the furniture.

埋 mái

FormEarth (土) beside “within” (里) — placed into the ground.

LogicTo hide or bury — both are 埋.

WisdomBurial is earth’s most solemn duty: seeds, wine, and the loyal dead — “green hills everywhere can bury the faithful.”

型 xíng

Form“Punish” (刑) as sound over earth (土) — the mould for casting.

Logic型 is the earthen mould for casting bronze: pour the metal in, and the vessel forms.

Wisdom典型, 模型, 造型 — “model” began as an earthen mould: the pattern of all things, poured from clay.
