The Vessel FamilyRadical 皿

A bowl that holds a whole set of values

ShuowenShuowen: “皿, the vessel for food. Pictograph — of one kind with the dou.”

The oracle form of 皿 is an open-mouthed vessel: two ears, a ring foot. The vessel radical keeps the world of the table — basin, plate, cup, saucer, a whole tableware of descendants; and, more wonderfully, the ancients saw life itself in the vessel: water overflowing is 益 “benefit”, bending to a reflection is 监 “oversee”, drooling over another’s dish is 盗 “steal”, scrubbing to the bottom is 尽 “exhaust”. One bowl holds an entire set of values.

The Root Character · Reading “皿” in Three Layers

See the form

The oracle vessel: open mouth, two ears, ring foot — a food dish set on the table.

Read the logic

Vessel characters are objects and the act of holding: 盂, 盘, 盏, 盎 — whatever holds takes the sign.

Grasp the wisdom

The philosophy of the vessel is emptiness and fullness: empty, it can hold; full, it overflows. 益 “benefit” and 尽 “exhaust” are both written on it — know the measure when receiving, and finish the work when doing.

  2. BronzeThe body widens; ears and foot distinct.
  3. Small sealSquared like a ritual vessel, evenly set.
  4. Clerical & regularFive strokes fix the form: 皿.

The Chain of Wares

The life of one vessel: hold rice, hold soup, fill up, overflow — and finally see your own face in the basin water.

From rice vessel to mirror
盂

yú

Shuowen: “a rice vessel” — broad-bellied, open-mouthed.

One of the oldest dishes — in the alms bowl (钵盂) begins the business of three meals a day.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

益 yì

FormWater (turned sideways) above a vessel (皿) — full to overflowing.

Logic益 is the original character for 溢, “overflow”: water brimming the vessel is benefit.

WisdomFull overflows, and the overflow is the benefit — profit, efficiency, refinement all come from a full vessel, with its risk attached.

盗 dào

Form“次” — the look of drooling — above a vessel (皿).

LogicSeeing another’s dish and salivating is 盗 — the root meaning is that plain.

Wisdom盗 does not draw a knife; it draws the drool: greed begins as envy — guard the heart before the door.

血 xuè

FormA short stroke — one drop of blood — in a vessel (皿).

LogicIn sacrifice, blood was held in the vessel and shown to the spirits — blood is the offering in the dish.

Wisdom血 reminds you: the most solemn things go in the most solemn vessels — blood-sealed alliances have the 皿 in them.

盡 jìn

FormThe traditional 盡: a hand with a brush (聿) scrubbing the vessel (皿) — scrub to the very bottom.

LogicTo scrub the vessel to its end is 尽.

Wisdom尽力, 尽心, 尽量 — do the work like scrubbing a dish: every place reached, and only then is it “exhausted”. The simplified 尽 keeps the meaning.
