The Speech FamilyRadical 言
Between tongue and teeth, the heaviest thing is trust
ShuowenShuowen: “Speech (言): direct statement is 言; answering argument is 语.”
The oracle form of 言 is a tongue with a mark above — what comes out of the mouth is speech. The 言 radical is the script’s debate hall: 说, 谈, 议, 论, 辩, 诘 — the ancients gave every way of speaking its own character; and 诺, 誓, 信, 诚 gave every promise its rank. 人言为信 — “a person’s word is trust”: this family holds the entire Chinese ethics of speaking.
The Root Character · Reading “言” in Three Layers
See the form
The oracle form: a tongue with a short mark above — speaking is the tongue moving.
Read the logic
On the left as 讠: 说, 话, 谈, 议; at the foot as 言: 誓, 警, 信 — one mouth, two postures.
Grasp the wisdom
“A person (人) plus a word (言) is trust (信).” What a person says must count. The character staples the person to the word — break faith, and you lose the person first.
The Making of a Glyph
- Oracle boneA tongue with a mark — sound indicated.
- BronzeThe tongue fills; the mark is clear.
- Small sealDot above, mouth below — words stacking.
- Clerical & regularSeven strokes settle into 言.
Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.
The Chain of Speaking
The ancients classified ways of speaking finely: to state, to answer, to discuss, to argue, to promise, to swear — read in order, it is a complete conversational ethics.
From slow of speech to sworn to heavenSlow of speech. “The gentleman wishes to be slow in speech and quick in action.”
Speaking slowly is not dullness — it is care.
Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One
When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.
信 xìn
FormA person (亻) standing beside their word (言).
LogicShuowen: “信, truthfulness. From person and word — a compound idea.”
WisdomWhat a person says should count. Trust, credit, good faith — the virtue the Chinese prize most, drawn as directly as possible.
警 jǐng
FormReverence (敬) above words (言) — words that command respect.
LogicWords that wake people up are 警.
WisdomAlarm, warning, aphorism — good words tighten the heart. 警 is speech performing self-defence.
讼 sòng
FormWords (讠) in public (公) — dispute brought to the hall.
LogicShuowen: “讼, to dispute.” Speaking before the assembly is 讼.
WisdomA lawsuit is 讼: words demanded in public, evidence required — the character asked for openness from the start.
诗 shī
FormWords (讠) beside temple (寺) — a phono-semantic compound.
LogicShuowen: “诗, intent. From words, temple as sound” — yet it carries the tradition: “poetry states intent.”
WisdomPoetry is speech at its most distilled — “in the heart it is intent; spoken, it is poetry.” Speech at its utmost becomes poem.
