The Boat FamilyRadical 舟

Advancing without walking — the boat taught us

ShuowenShuowen: “Boat (舟), the vessel. In high antiquity Gong Gu and Huo Di hollowed wood for boats and whittled wood for oars. Pictograph.”

The oracle form of 舟 is a small boat: bow, cabin and stern all present. The boat radical keeps the world of the water — and several common characters turn out to be affairs of the boat: 前 “forward” is a foot on a deck, 般 “sort” is turning a vessel, 服 “serve” is working one, 俞 is hollowing a log. China’s earliest long journeys all happened on one boat: 同舟共济 “one boat, one fate,” 逆水行舟 “upstream, row or slip” — a single boat holds every attitude toward life.

The Root Character · Reading “舟” in Three Layers

See the form

The oracle boat: bow slightly raised, cabin centred, stern tucked in — a sketched skiff.

Read the logic

Boat characters are all affairs of the water: 船, 航, 艇, 舱, 舵 — from dugout to tower-ship, all in one radical.

Grasp the wisdom

“In the same boat, crossing together.” The boat’s first lesson: in a storm, the whole boat shares one life.

Regular script
  1. Oracle boneBow, cabin and stern — a boat in profile.
  2. BronzeThe hull lengthens; cabin lines distinct.
  3. Small sealLines drawn in, the boat laid athwart.
  4. Clerical & regularSix strokes fix the form: 舟.

Glyphs are schematic reconstructions, not rubbings.

The Chain of Sailing

Downstream, upstream, across, moored — every way a boat moves was coined, and each grew a metaphor for life.

Six ways a boat moves on water
济

jì

To cross — “in the same boat, crossing together”.

济 is mutual accomplishment on water: one boat, one crossing, no one able to do without the others.

Character Assembly · Two Parts Become One

When two parts walk toward each other, a new character is born. Watch how they meet.

前 qián

FormA foot (止) on a boat (舟) — advancing without walking.

LogicShuowen: “前, advancing without walking.” Stand on a boat: no steps needed, the boat moves.

Wisdom前 is borrowed speed: an individual’s steps are limited — board a boat (an era, an enterprise) and you advance without walking.

般 bān

FormA hand with a tool (殳) turning a boat (舟) — spinning the vessel.

LogicThe root meaning is turning a vessel in place — from it: 般配, 一般, 百般.

Wisdom般 is the boat turning in place: one circle is “just so” (一般), a hundred circles are “a hundred ways” (百般) — a boat’s motion became life’s multiplicity.

服 fú

FormA boat (舟) with a hand pressing a figure (𠬝) — working the boat.

LogicThe root meaning: to work a boat — when the vessel obeys, it is 服.

Wisdom服从, 服务, 心服 — “serve” came from working a boat: to make a boat obey you, first understand the water.

俞 yú

FormA hollowed log (亼 over 舟) with water flowing past (巜) — a dugout canoe.

Logic俞 is the boat’s ancestor: hollow out one log, let the water run past.

Wisdom俞 was later borrowed for surnames and assent (俞允, “graciously approve”) — inside the character, the first knife-stroke of shipbuilding.
